New Year’s Eve is here and many people are ready to get out of their houses and out on the town. But while everyone is having fun, organizations such as the Colorado State Patrol say it’s important to make sure a safe ride home is planned ahead of time.

The CSP along with the Colorado Department of Transportation and 71 other statewide law enforcement agencies will be conducting increased patrols through Jan. 2 as part of a New Years Eve campaign. The annual campaign seeks to combat the rise in impaired driving-related crashes and fatalities seen each year around the holidays.

“Colorado law enforcement made 1,350 DUI arrests last December alone. Avoid a DUI this holiday season by making a plan for a sober ride,” said Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol.

Many businesses have offered rideshare promotions to keep roads safer for everyone even when you don’t have a designated driver handy.

The rideshare service Uber in partnership with the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving have a ride credit voucher special running through 10 a.m. on New Years Day. Users can enter the code SAFECO24 in the app promotions section to get $7 off of their fare. It’s valid statewide throughout Colorado wherever holiday festivities take you.

The Wilhite Law Firm is also offering a program to reimburse rideshares up to $35 on Uber or Lyft. They just ask that riders get a digital receipt of the trip to attach to the law firm’s reimbursement form as well as a copy of the rider’s ID. Reimbursement forms will be accepted for the first two weeks of the new year, and come in the form of an Uber or Lyft credit.

The McDivitt Law Firm is again offering free cab rides home to residents in Colorado Springs and Pueblo which the firm has done since 2007. The firm says it has provided more than 19,000 safe rides home.

“We want everyone to celebrate safely on New Year’s Eve,” said McDivitt Vice President and Chief Operating Officer David McDivitt. “We see so many lives changed when people make a bad decision that causes a devastating crash, and this is just one way to help keep people in our community safe. We encourage everyone to make the right choice this holiday and either designate a sober driver, or call a cab on McDivitt.”

To use McDivitt’s Safe Ride Home Program, active between 10 p.m. Dec. 31 and 3 a.m. Jan. 1, call zTrip in Colorado Springs at 719-766-4567 (or 719-543-2525 for Pueblo) or use the app and mark “Pay in Car” at the time of booking. In Pueblo. In the cab tell the driver “It’s on McDivitt” and the ride between the establishment and the rider’s residence will be covered. Rides will not be covered between drinking establishments or restaurants.

According to Colorado State Patrol, as of Dec. 9, 30% of all traffic fatalities this year have involved an impaired driver. The agency warns that a lot of DUI arrests happen in December during holiday time and increased travel, encouraging people to make sure they have a safe way home on New Years Eve.

If you plan to host a New Year’s Eve party, make sure your guests stay safe. CDOT suggests tips such as collecting your guests’ car keys upon arrival, encouraging them to designate a sober driver or use a service, offering them a place to stay if a sober ride home is unavailable, stop serving alcohol at least two hours before the party is over, and providing plenty of food and non-alcoholic drink options.
