Court records reveal additional details about the man arrested for allegedly shooting his mother on Christmas Day.

Ulises Jaquez-Hernandez, 22, is facing attempted murder in the first degree, assault in the first degree, illegal discharge of a firearm, and prohibited large-capacity magazines felony charges among others.

Colorado Springs police were dispatched around 4 a.m. Wednesday to a residence on the 1600 block of Rushmore Drive near South Circle Drive and U.S. 24, after receiving a call about a shooting.

When they arrived police say they found the victim, identified as Diana Corina Hernandez Gamon, 52, bleeding heavily from her right arm in an upstairs bedroom and Ulises had left the residence. Diana was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Hernandez Gamon’s husband, Jose Bernardino Jaquez Avalos, 46, told officers Jaquez-Hernandez had been staying with them and that he and Jaquez-Hernandez got into a verbal argument on Dec. 23 about the son not having a job.

According to Avalos, the argument continued Christmas Eve after he, his wife, and Jaquez-Hernandez went to a family member’s residence. When they all got back to their house, Avalos and Hernandez Gamon went to their bedroom. They then heard footsteps, heard Jaquez-Hernandez’s voice, and then a single gunshot was fired through the bedroom door, striking Hernandez Gamon in her right arm.

According to a family member, Jaquez-Hernandez left and came back to the residence multiple times exiting and entering through different doors asking about the whereabouts of the gun he used. Once Jaquez-Hernandez returned for the final time, officers were on scene and he was taken into custody.

Jaquez-Hernandez told officers after he was detained that “he shot his mother but he thought he was going to shoot his dad.”

Jaquez-Hernandez is being held at the El Paso County jail on a $50,000 bond. His next hearing is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m.
