2 displaced after apartment fire in Colorado Springs

Two people were displaced in an apartment fire Monday on the east side, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Crews responded to the fire at 1410 Michelle Court, near East Fountain Boulevard and South Murray Boulevard, shortly after 7:30 p.m. They arrived to flames and smoke coming from the attic of the building, according to a social media post by the Fire Department.

The fire was contained to the attic area and extinguished by about 8:45 p.m.

One resident said four units were damaged, two due to the fire and two from the smoke. But, he said two of those units are vacant.

Another resident at the Antero Apartments complex, Francisco Lopez, was credited for quick action.

“I was in my daughter’s room and I started smelling burning rubber and electricity so I got up and I saw smoke coming from the vent,” Lopez said. “So I told her to get up and go outside. I looked again where the vent was and there was fire dripping down. So I quickly called the Fire Department and went outside to pull the fire alarm.”

Lopez made sure his daughter was safe and warm in their car while he ran to his neighbors’ doors to notify them and then back inside his apartment to grab warm clothes.

“I know a lot of my neighbors have kids and it’s late and it’s the holidays but I’d rather them be inconvenienced than dead,” Lopez said. “I’ve been to war so I can stay calm during stressful situations. I feel blessed I was the one that found it because I feel like other people would’ve hesitated.”

No injuries were reported, the Fire Department said. The Red Cross was notified to assist the displaced residents. A manager with the Antero leasing office said the Red Cross would be on site Tuesday afternoon to assist all the residents.

“I spoke with the Red Cross and they gave me a voucher,” Lopez said. “I’m taken care of right now but my main priority is trying to get a different unit so I can get my daughter situated because it’s the holidays.”

No information on the cause of the fire was released Tuesday.
