Ski trails debut for season at Mueller State Park

It’s not a Nordic center. But a state park is offering groomed trails that are rare across the Pikes Peak region.

In Teller County, Mueller State Park’s Facebook page recently revealed the season’s first corduroy made over three trails: Black Bear Trail and the others around the Conifer Ridge and Grouse Mountain campgrounds.

The groomed trails have been popular in recent years, the park’s manager previously told The Courier.

“It’s not unheard of to see the trailhead parking lot to Grouse Mountain and Black Bear trails completely full of skiers within a day or two after a snowstorm, especially during a weekend,” Brian Kerrigan said.

That’s when conditions are best, he said — a day or two after a storm. Before heading out, he suggested checking conditions by visiting the park’s Facebook page or calling the visitor center: 719-687-2366.

“Keep in mind that we are not trying to be a ski resort or Nordic center at Mueller. The climate and snow conditions will not allow that,” Kerrigan said. “But we will provide this recreational opportunity as conditions allow.”

Skiing is not limited to the groomers at Mueller. Other cross-country skiers, along with snowshoers, venture across the trail system sprawling 50-plus miles through meadows and forests that trend up and down.
