Man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on runaway girl
Colorado Springs police last week arrested a man suspected of sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl.
Dakota Shane Yates, 31, was arrested Dec. 18 and taken to the El Paso County jail where he is being held on a $75,000 bond.
Yates was found by police in his vehicle at 5506 N. Academy Blvd. after the victim, a registered runaway, escaped the vehicle and went to a nearby business to call police.
The girl told police she ran away from home on the night of Dec. 5 and Yates soon picked her up near the 1500 block of North Union Boulevard. She told investigators that she told Yates about running away from home due to sexual abuse from her uncle and that she had told him she was 13. She said the two had stayed in his car for two weeks before she escaped.
Through an interview with a detective, she said Yates had sexually assaulted her multiple times, and that she had told him “No” multiple times.
Yates is being charged with sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse, a class 3 felony. His next appearance in court will be Friday .
