The Colorado Springs man who crashed his car into downtown businesses after being shot during a break-in was sentenced to probation on Friday.

Fidencio Meza-Pelayo, 24, appeared in court for his sentencing hearing on Friday afternoon after pleading guilty earlier this year to a kidnapping charge.

Meza-Pelayo in February caused a chaotic downtown scene after crashing his car leading to significant damage to the Skirted Heifer restaurant and AT&T Store at the corner of East Bijou and North Tejon streets.

According to previous reporting from The Gazette, the trail of destruction started around 1:30 a.m., in the Hillside neighborhood, outside of a house on the 1900 block of South Prospect Street, where Meza-Pelayo was involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend.

During the disturbance, his girlfriend ran across the street to get help from a neighbor, and the suspect “temporarily lost sight of her,” police said.

Meza-Pelayo then ran to his house, came back out, got into a vehicle and backed out of the driveway, hitting a neighbor’s parked car.

At that point, police said, Meza-Pelayo got out of the car and attempted to break into the neighbor’s home, thinking his girlfriend, who was a block away on foot, was hiding inside. Police said the homeowner fired a single shot, hitting the man.

Meza-Pelayo said during court on Friday that he had to have surgery due to the injuries sustained from the shooting. He appeared to several hearings earlier this year with a walking cane.

Wounded, the suspect reportedly got back into his car and sped off, eventually ending up in the downtown area, where he allegedly hit at least one parked car and crashed into several businesses along the 200 block of North Tejon Street, including the AT&T Store and the Skirted Heifer.

“(The car) just took out everything,” said Skirted Heifer owner Kevin Megyeri after the incident.

Meza-Pelayo was arrested immediately after the incident and initially faced 10 charges. Court records show that Meza-Pelayo pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping in October.

There was no question was Meza-Pelayo’s sentence would be entering Friday’s hearing as the plea agreement came with a stipulated sentence of four years supervised probation.

Judge David Shakes said that the lack of a prison sentence made sense for Meza-Pelayo because he felt it was clear reading the mitigation report that “this was an unusual event for (Meza-Pelayo).”

With the guilty plea the remaining nine charges against Meza-Pelayo were dismissed.
