A man slain by police in a Colorado Springs officer-involved shooting on Dec. 13 has been identified as 33-year-old Dean Ackerman.

A call for service came in at 11 p.m., alerting law enforcement to shots being fired near the 3800 block of Astrozon Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found a man later identified as Ackerman inside a vehicle in a parking lot. Police say he was waving a handgun.

Officers said they attempted to verbally deescalate the situation, negotiating with Ackerman for nearly an hour. During the negotiation, he allegedly fired multiple shots, ignoring commands to put down the weapon.

Less-than-lethal impact weapons were deployed but were unsuccessful, police said. At one point, Ackerman raised his weapon toward the officers, leading several of them to fire at least one round, killing him.

No other community members or officers were injured during the incident.

Eight CSPD officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. While one deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was on scene, he was not involved in the shooting, according to a news release Thursday.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting.
