Students at Manitou Elementary School evacuated due to potential HAZMAT incident

Manitou Springs Elementary School D14 students were evacuated Tuesday morning to Manitou Springs High School due to an air contamination incident.

Crews with the Manitou Springs Fire Department and the Manitou Springs Police Department responded on scene. According to the fire department, all students were evaluated with no injury or cause to be medically evaluated.

Parents are being asked to pick up their children as soon as possible from Manitou High School, 401 El Monte Place.

According to Manitou Elementary School Principal Carolyn Leyes people inside the school identified a smell in the auditorium around 9:47 a.m. and immediately cleared the area.

The El Paso County Hazmat team has arrived on scene to investigate the cause of the incident and identify the substance along with the fire department.

According to one parent who would like to remain anonymous, teachers and students were coughing, vomiting, complaining of burning throats, and had nose bleeds. They say it affected students in the third through fifth grade and the substance appeared to be a powder. The students and faculty were then evacuated and the fire crews performed vitals on the students. The school says they will be releasing to the parents a list of symptoms to watch out for.

Also, all Tuesday evening activities at Manitou Elementary have been canceled including the holiday concert.
