New details revealed in shooting death of teen

An arrest affidavit for the teenager accused of killing a 17-year-old in November states that investigators believe the shooting took place because of an argument over clothing.

Mykael Weathington, 18, was arrested on Dec. 6 for allegedly shooting and killing a 17-year-old boy, whose name has not been released by law enforcement, near the 1900 block of South Chelton Road around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 26.

An arrest affidavit for Weathington obtained by The Gazette describes how police suspect an argument between the two led to Weathington shooting and killing the teenager, who was unarmed.

The affidavit states that the two began to argue in the victim’s apartment right before the shooting took place, which led Weathington to request that he and the victim continue the argument outside.

Once outside the victim and Weathington continued arguing and began to push each other when a security guard arrived and asked the two to stop. After the security guard arrived, Weathington took out a handgun and fired several shots at the victim, killing him, according to the affidavit.

Weathington and one witness, who is also 17 years old, fled the scene immediately while the security guard attempted to give first aid to the victim, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states that the argument began over a dispute regarding clothing that Weathington and the victim bought at Citadel Mall earlier in the day.

Weathington was arrested on Nov. 27 — the day after the shooting — along with two other teenagers on weapon and vehicle theft charges, according to previous reporting from The Gazette.

Weathington faces five charges, including first and second-degree murder, for allegedly killing the 17-year-old. He remains in custody at the El Paso County jail on a no-bond hold and will make his first appearance in Colorado’s 4th Judicial District Court on Dec. 12.
