A homicide suspect was arrested and taken into custody late Friday night with the help of one of Colorado Springs’ police dogs.

An El Paso County sheriff’s detective, Colorado Springs police officers and the county’s violent offender fugitive task force tracked down a man wanted on a warrant for homicide around 10:30 p.m., according to the police blotter.

The man was considered armed and dangerous and located at the 800 block of South Eighth Street. CSPD’s tactical enforcement unit was then requested, and officers along with K-9 Riggs and his handler Officer Lofgren, arrived at the scene.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot and discarded a handgun despite warnings from officers that Riggs would be released if he didn’t surrender. Riggs then apprehended the man, who was later treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries before being booked at the Criminal Justice Center.

He is facing charges of first-degree murder and failure to appear in court on previous charges that include motor vehicle theft, possession of a defaced firearm and obstruction.

An investigation is ongoing and the suspect’s name is being withheld.
