1 seriously injured in shooting near Colorado Springs park; police investigating

Detectives from Colorado Springs Police Department’s Domestic Violence/Adult Sexual Assault unit are investigating the circumstances of a shooting that left a man seriously injured on Monday, officials said.
Officers responded to a 1:30 p.m. call about a shooting in the 1200 block of Kingsley Drive, just south of Twain Park and San Miguel Street. When they arrived, they found a woman at the residence with visible injuries but no gunshot wounds, according to CSPD spokeswoman Caitlin Ford.
About half a block from the residence, near the park, officers found a man with at least one gunshot wound, Ford said.
Johnny Bruton and Mario Ramirez, contractors who were working at a residence on the same street, told The Gazette they heard a gunshot and saw a man run out of 1218 Kingsley Drive.
“We’re both gun owners, so we know what a gunshot sounds like,” Ramirez said.
Bruton said he saw the man run up the street, clutching his side, for about half a block before he collapsed to the ground.
“I went to see what was going on,” Bruton said. “I saw a person with a gunshot wound in his side.”
Bruton stayed with the wounded individual, attempting to keep him conscious and calm, until police arrived, he said.
“Where I come from, when you see something like that, that’s what you do,” he said.
Both parties were taken to nearby hospitals. The man’s injuries were serious, but he was expected to survive, according to CSPD.
The man and woman knew each other, but police would not speculate on the nature of the relationship. Ford did confirm that police had responded to calls at that residence before.
“It’s still a very fluid, active investigation,” she said.
Nearby Twain Elementary School was placed on lockdown status until police were able to confirm that there was no immediate threat, Ford said.
The north end of Kingsley Drive would likely remain blocked off for several hours as investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses, officials said.
