Sugar plum fairies and dancing snowflakes: Where to watch ‘The Nutcracker’ in Colorado Springs this year

Christmas time is also the season of “The Nutcracker.”

With sugar plum fairies, a marching army of mice, dancing snowflakes and a prince, the 1892 classical ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky is a seasonal tradition.

Here in Colorado Springs, local dance studios and orchestras are gearing up to perform “The Nutcracker,” from classical renditions of the piece to more local adaptations. Here’s a list of “The Nutcracker” performances this year around the Springs:

‘A Colorado Nutcracker’ presented by the Colorado Ballet Society

(7 p.m. Dec. 17-18, 2 p.m. Dec. 18; Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave.)

The Colorado Ballet Society, with the Colorado Youth Ballet, will put on “A Colorado Nutcracker” in mid-December. This show will have uniquely Colorado details. While following the original story, some of the settings may seem familiar — like Glen Eyrie Castle. Some characters will also take on the Colorado theme, with the ballet highlighting Colorado Springs founder Gen. William J. Palmer and inventor Nikola Tesla.

Tickets start at $40. pikespeakcenter.com
