Colorado State volleyball’s Emily Kohan, Malaya Jones earn Mountain West awards

Colorado State hired a good one in Emily Kohan.

And the Rams have the best one in the league in Malaya Jones.

Kohan was named Mountain West Coach of the Year Tuesday after guiding the Rams (18-10, 14-4) to the regular-season title, while Jones was named conference Player of the Year.

Top-seeded Colorado State opens the league tournament at 2 p.m. Friday against the Fresno State-San Diego State winner in Las Vegas.

Kohan is in her second season coaching the Rams, who needed a strong hire to replace Tom Hilbert, who was named conference Coach of the Year 12 times. She helped the Rams to an outright conference championship one season after leading the program to a runner-up finish in both the regular season and conference tournament.

Jones is the first Colorado State player to win Player of the Year since Katie Oleksak in 2019. Jones led the conference in kills (326) and points (370). She also ranked in the top 10 in hitting percentage.

“Player of the Year means everything to me. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a large part of my career,” Jones said.

Kohan’s coaching helped the Rams lead the Mountain West in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists and kills. The Rams placed three other players on the All-Mountain West team: Emery Herman, Karina Leber and Naeemah Weathers.
