Secretary of State Jena Griswold has ordered a mandatory recount in the razor-thin race for Colorado House District 16, according to a Monday news release.

Final unofficial election results showed Republican challenger Rebecca Keltie with a seven-vote lead over Democratic incumbent Stephanie Vigil, who has served as the district’s representative for the past two years.

Colorado law requires an automatic recount if the margin of victory in a race is within 0.5% of the winner’s total. Keltie currently holds 50.01% of the vote to Vigil’s 49.99%.

El Paso County election officials will work with a bipartisan canvass board to ensure the tabulation equipment is working properly before beginning the recount, which must be completed by Dec. 6.

Steve Schleiker, El Paso County Clerk and Recorder, said in a Tuesday email that the recount will commence at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“While we were closely monitoring the weather forecast, the predicted storm and snow accumulations have significantly decreased compared to (Monday’s) projections,” Schleiker said in the email. “At this time, there are no anticipated changes to our schedule.”

Vigil, a first-term lawmaker who is the first Democrat to represent the central Colorado Springs district, has said she will honor the results of the recount.
