Pikes Peak region football teams ready for upcoming playoff matchups
Only four Pikes Peak region football teams remain in the hunt for a championship as the playoffs resume Friday.
In 4A, Palmer Ridge and Mesa Ridge will battle for semifinals spots, while in 3A, Discovery Canyon also looks for a final-four berth.
The Classical Academy will play for a spot in the 2A championship game, which will take place at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo on Nov. 30.
Palmer Ridge is the lone team of the four to host a home game this weekend.
Below is an overview of the remaining area schools in the playoffs.
Palmer Ridge
Record, seed: 10-1, 4A No. 4 seed

Upcoming: No. 5 Broomfield at Don Breese at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Bears beat the Eagles 38-14 to advance to the 4A championship game last season. Palmer Ridge outgained Broomfield in rushing yardage 322-48 in last year’s semifinals. Both teams have 10-1 records and six-game winning streaks. Palmer Ridge has won nine of its 10 contests by double-figures.
Mesa Ridge
Record, seed: 8-3, 4A No. 7 seed

Upcoming: At No. 2 Montrose at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Although Montrose boasts an 11-0 record, the Grizzlies nearly defeated the Hawks on Oct. 18. But the Hawks burned more than 10 minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter to secure a 32-28 victory at C.A. Foster Stadium. The Grizzlies have won three in a row since their loss to Montrose.
Discovery Canyon
Record, seed: 9-2, 3A No. 8 seed
Coach: Shawn Mitchell

Upcoming: At No. 1 Thompson Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday.
In 2023, the Thunder opened the postseason with a road game at Thompson Valley, then the No. 3 seed. Discovery Canyon lost 21-17 and hopes to avenge its loss to the Eagles in this year’s playoffs. The Thunder enter the matchup on an eight-game winning streak and have scored 49 or more in seven of their past eight contests.

Upcoming: At No. 2 Basalt at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Classical Academy mounted a comeback victory against Berthoud in a flip of fortune for the Titans. In their 2023 quarterfinal, the Titans lost after a safety in the final minute. Last weekend, the Titans’ Jackson Schipfer scored on an option play from 7 yards with 2 seconds left in the game. Now, the Titans face Basalt, whom TCA beat 40-19 in the first round last season.
