Smoke shop hit again in smash-and-grab burglary

The latest in a string of smash-and-grab burglaries left a business off South Academy Boulevard with cleanup and repair — again.

Colorado Springs police responded to the burglary shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday at a smoke shop in the 2400 block of South Academy Boulevard, near Astrozon Boulevard. The same shop was hit in early October.

On Wednesday, a blue Kia sedan smashed into the front of the smoke shop, Gazette news partner KOAA reported.

Police said an unspecified number of suspects, believed to be juveniles, gained entry into the business by driving a stolen sedan through the front.

The suspects stole an undisclosed number of items before leaving the stolen car at the scene. “Significant damage” was done to the building, police said.

Police spokesman Ira Cronin said 41 smash-and-grabs have been reported this year in Colorado Springs, a dramatic increase from the eight reported in 2023.
