Sheriff’s office searching for suspect in Stratmoor area assault involving ax

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for a suspect linked to an assault involving an ax in the Stratmoor Valley area Tuesday morning.
Just before 10 a.m., law enforcement received reports of someone being attacked with an ax inside a home in the 1100 block of Denise Drive.
As deputies were responding, the suspect allegedly left the area on a bicycle. Medical aid was provided to the victim who suffered injuries consistent with “being struck with a blunt end of the ax,” according to the sheriff’s office news release.
An ax was found at the scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the news release Tuesday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office has identified the suspect as 40-year-old Steven Barcelona. Deputies along with officers from the Fountain Police Department conducted a search of the Stratmoor Valley neighborhood using K-9 units and drones but were unable to locate Barcelona.
Law enforcement warns the community to call 911 and avoid approaching Barcelona if seen, as he is considered armed and dangerous.
