A dining hall at Peterson Space Force Base closed over the summer after a “significant safety incident” and has not yet reopened.

Peterson’s installation leaders are working with the Department of the Air Force and Air Force Installation Mission Support Center on “a long-term way forward” for the Aragon Dining Facility along Ent Avenue, a formal statement from a Space Base Delta 1 spokesperson said Thursday.

“The overriding priority will continue to be on ensuring Guardians and Airmen maintain access to quality, healthy food options,” the statement said.

The dining hall closed July 2 for infrastructure repairs after the safety incident, according a memo posted on the Peterson website. Neither the memo or statement sent in response to Gazette questions provided any specifics on the type of safety incident that occurred.

The statement said airmen living in the dormitories on Peterson are receiving basic allowance for subsistence II, a higher monthly reimbursement that service members can receive if the base does not provide adequate food. The monthly reimbursement is $920 per month, according to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

Peterson offers multiple on-base food options and grocery services in addition to off-base options, the official statement said.

“Unit leadership continues to deliberately engage with and survey Guardians and Airmen affected by the temporary (dining facility) closure through monthly reviews, work center visits, and direct engagement and have so far received overwhelmingly positive feedback from dorm residents receiving (basic allowance for subsistence II),” the statement said.

The dining facility was originally built in 1967 and went through a major renovation that was finished in 2010, according to a Space Observer news story. The Space Observer was published through the Air Force.
