Pueblo cannabis company to pay $225,000 fine in settlement with Attorney General’s Office

A Pueblo-based cannabis company will pay a fine of at least $225,000 after reaching a settlement with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, according to a press release.

Bee’s Knees CBD’s and its owner Joseph Leyba were found in an investigation to have “made several misrepresentations on its website regarding the source of their products, wrongly characterized some products as “organic,” lacked a proper age verification system implemented on its website, and lied about supporting conservation groups,” according to the press release.

“Colorado is committed to maintaining an effective system of overseeing the sale of legal cannabis products — one that keeps it out of the hands of kids, ensures safety standards, requires chain-of-custody tracking, and gives consumers important information about the products they buy,” Attorney General Phil Weiser said.

“In this case, the company misrepresented to their customers the source and nature of their products and sold intoxicating products without verifying the age of customers. This settlement will hold them accountable for those violations of the law and will ensure compliance in the future.”

The press release states that the initial fine of $225,000 could rise to $495,000 if Bee’s Knees fails to comply with the settlement terms. In addition to the fine, Bee’s Knees agreed as part of the settlement to “fully comply with state law, including all representations it makes to customers.”

The press release states investigators discovered Bee’s Knees had lied to wholesalers that their products were organic and produced in Colorado. Additionally, investigators found that Bee’s Knees claims’ on its website that it had partnered with several conservation nonprofits was also a lie.

Bee’s Knees is a Pueblo-based “family owned and operated” cannabis company selling CBD products and has been in business for six years, according to its website.
