Colorado Springs police are saying that a scary report of a man with a rifle near an area school Tuesday appears to be a hoax.

Colorado Springs police received reports around 11 a.m. of a man with a rifle outside of Ridgeview Elementary School making threats. However, after responding and investigating, police say this incident appears to be a “hoax.”

The department has not received any additional reports of shots fired or injuries. No one matching the initial description has been located near the District 49 school, which is east of the intersection of Dublin and North Powers boulevards.

Officers were still on the scene as of noon but will be clearing out soon, according to a department spokesperson.

During the investigation, and “out of an abundance of caution” the school was placed on lockdown — meaning external doors were locked but the school day continued uninterrupted inside, the the spokesperson said.

Police say they will  continue to investigate the hoax phone call, which has impacted additional schools, according to an online blotter entry.
