Sunday had a day chock-full of prep sporting events after last week’s snowstorm delayed several contests.

Here is a recap of some of those matchups and an update on postseason brackets.

Postseason football

Discovery Canyon earns No. 8 seed in 3A playoffs

The Thunder will face Pueblo East in the first round of the 3A playoffs and will host the Eagles in the opening-round contest.

Discovery Canyon beat Pueblo East 32-14 at home in the second game of the season and Hayden Jones rushed 14 times for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Devon Baker led the Thunder in rushing in that matchup and had eight touches for 138 yards and a score.

Since the Thunder began the year 1-2, they’ve won seven consecutive games and have scored at least 49 points in each of those contests.

Air Academy to play following snow delays

The No. 22-seeded Kadets were slated to play No. 11 Heritage late last week, but the snowstorm pushed their contest to Monday.

Now, the Kadets head to Heritage where they hope to upset the Eagles in their 5 p.m. road contest.

Air Academy has not played a game since Halloween when they faced Rampart on the road.

4A

No. 13 Rampart 40, No. 20 Grand Junction Central 7

In similar fashion to 2023, the Rams blew out Grand Junction Central to advance to the second round.

The Warriors took a 7-3 lead early in the game, but the Rams scored 37 consecutive points to keep the Warriors at bay and advance.

Rampart will head to No. 4 Palmer Ridge in the second round. The Bears own a 50-13 win over the Rams, which came Oct. 24 at Don Breese.

No. 12 Vista Ridge 35, No. 21 Highlands Ranch 8

The Wolves’ offense needed a moment to get going against the Falcons. After the first quarter, though, Highlands Ranch couldn’t stop the onslaught.

Vista Ridge built a 7-0 lead in the opening frame and scored 21 combined points in the second and third quarters to build a 28-0 lead.

The Wolves added another score in the fourth to send Vista Ridge to the second round where they’ll face No. 5 Broomfield on Nov. 15.

No. 17 Loveland 45, No. 16 Doherty 14

The Spartans kept it close with Loveland most of the first half and trailed 21-14 at the break. But the Red Wolves forced five turnovers in the third quarter to keep Doherty off the board.

After the third quarter, Doherty trailed 42-14 and could not recover from the troublesome start to the second half.

No. 6 Wiggins 49, No. 11 CSCS 12

The Tigers proved mightier than the Lions in this matchup and Wiggins built a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Wiggins’ Jayson Lousberg had 161 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the first half for the Tigers and their defense shut out the Lions in the opening two quarters.

Colorado Springs Christian finished the year 5-5 and with a record of .500 or better for the third consecutive season.

Boys soccer

4A

No. 3 Air Academy 1, No. 11 Evergreen 0

Noah Kostanian Urvik’s first-half strike put the Kadets in the Nov. 13 semifinal contest where they hope to continue their superb season.

Kostanian Urvik’s goal hit off the crossbar and went into the goal line to give the Kadets a 1-0 lead they never relinquished.

Air Academy unblemished day on the scoreboard marks the eighth time this season the Kadets have earned a shut-out victory.

The Kadets will face either No. 2 Battle Mountain or No. 10 Regis Groff in the semifinals.

Following postponements caused by the recent snowstorm, Woodland Park (3A) and Fountain Valley (2A) will play Nov. 11 and hope to punch their tickets to the semifinals.

Girls volleyball

Cheyenne Mountain earns state bid, Air Academy, St. Mary’s lose at regionals

The Red-Tailed Hawks went 2-0 at the 4A region 6 regional and earned a spot at the Denver Coliseum.

In their matches against the Kadets and against Glenwood Springs, Cheyenne Mountain allowed 20 set points just once and held their opponents to 17 or fewer in the other five.

Both Air Academy and St. Mary’s went 0-2 to conclude their season at the regional tournament.

The Kadets finished the season 9-15 while the Pirates ended the year 12-11, their eleventh consecutive year with a record of .500 or better.

Five other area teams had their matches pushed to Nov. 11 after the recent snowstorm and those include Discovery Canyon and Palmer Ridge (4A), The Classical Academy (3A), Calhan (2A) and Evangel Christian Academy (1A).
