Two men were injured in an apparent shooting in the Security-Widefield area Thursday.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving a call around 2:20 p.m. about multiple gunshots heard in the vicinity of the 200 block of Cunningham Drive. Deputies responded to the scene and sent out a shelter-in-place alert for the surrounding area, including Sproul Junior High and nearby schools.

When deputies arrived they found two adult males, both with non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officials could not confirm if the injuries the two men sustained were related to the shots fired or otherwise due to the ongoing investigation.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kurt Smith said that all involved individuals are “known to investigators,” and that there is not believed to be any ongoing threat to the public.

The shelter-in-place alert was canceled.

Smith credited the neighborhood for reacting with concern to the sounds of gunfire, with multiple calls for service coming in.

“Obviously, we appreciate being notified that quickly that something is occurring,” Smith said. “The community around here has been very supportive in providing information to law enforcement so that we can conduct a thorough investigation.”
