OneWheel rider identified after fatal crash near downtown Colorado Springs

Shooting on Colorado Springs' east side investigated

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified the OneWheel rider killed in a traffic collision downtown in the early hours of Oct. 6 as 52-year-old Benjamin Fox.

Just before 2 a.m., Colorado Springs police responded to the intersection of North Tejon Street and East Platte Avenue to investigate a crash between a motorcycle and an electric OneWheel — a skateboard-like device with one big wheel in the middle of the board.

Fire department and AMR staff also responded, providing emergency medical aid to the Onewheel rider who was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Several days later, the rider of the OneWheel, later identified as Fox, died due to their injuries, according to law enforcement.

Fox was a respected member of the international motorbike racing community, according to obituary remembrances posted online by CycleNews and MotoAmerica.

An Instagram account under his name included scenes of some of his OneWheel rides in recent years.

This is the 42nd traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 39 traffic related deaths.
