Palmer High School was temporarily locked down Thursday morning after police received two reports of a man  carrying an AK-47 assault rifle near the school’s campus.

The first report, which came just before 10 a.m., said the man was at East Boulder Street and North Wahsatch Avenue and patrol officers immediately began responding. The second call, relayed by a third party, claimed the suspect was then more than a block west, on the north side of the school.

While there was no indication that the school or students inside were being targeted, “out of an abundance of caution” the Police Department’s school resource officers worked with the District 11 security team to put the school on “lockdown,” police said. More than 12 patrol units, additional school resource officers and tactical unit officers responded to the area.

An individual who was in the high school Thursday reached out to The Gazette and said the school was on “secure” status, not lockdown, meaning the building could not be entered or exited, though the operations within the school were not changed.

The suspect was not found during a search of over an hour, police said. Officers spoke with one of the eyewitnesses, who confirmed from a photo that the suspect was a person “familiar to law enforcement” who frequently carries a folding scooter tucked under his arm, and equipped with a rifle sling and flashlight in a manner that makes it look like a rifle.

No charges were filed against the person Thursday afternoon, according to an online police blotter entry.
