Colorado Springs police arrest second suspect in homicide investigation after standoff Tuesday night

A second suspect in the alleged murder of a Colorado Springs man, 52-year-old David Charles Compare, was arrested late Tuesday night after a standoff and threats of a shootout with Colorado Springs police.

Detectives with the department’s Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, working with Metro detectives, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Colorado parole fugitive officers and the Colorado State Patrol, say they found 49-year-old Victor Carson, also known as Victor Martinez, driving a stolen vehicle in Colorado Springs.

Police said Carson was driving “erratically” and allegedly switched vehicles to disguise his movements. Detectives say they were able to follow Carson and watch him enter an apartment in the 3900 block of North Nevada Avenue.

Police applied for and were granted a search warrant for the apartment. The department’s Tactical Enforcement Unit to execute the warrant with the help of K-9 officers.

Law enforcement identified themselves and told Carson that they had a warrant for his arrest and told him they had a warrant to search the apartment.

They told the suspect to surrender, but Carson did not respond, according to a police blotter entry Tuesday night.

Several tips had been received that Carson was armed and had made threats to have a shootout with police. Based on this information, officers used the armored Bear Cat rescue vehicle to approach the apartment and launch pepper spray and tear gas.

Shortly thereafter, Carson exited the apartment and surrendered. He was not injured during the arrest.

Carson remains in El Paso County jail on bonds totaling over $5 million, with his next court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

On Aug. 8, 36-year-old Roger Vargas also was charged in the death of Compare while he was being held in the Bent County jail on unrelated charges.
