Highlights from the past week of prep sports in the Pikes Peak region

Gerardo Garcia, sr., Mitchell, boys’ soccer – Garcia continued his hot streak with scoring and Alameda felt the wrath of the Marauder.

Against Alameda, as well as Falcon, Garcia struck twice and, over his past three contests, he has seven goals.

The senior’s 14 goals lead the Marauders and his six assists are third among Mitchell players this season.

Bailey Bast, sr., Vista Ridge, softball – Bast drove in four of the Wolves’ 10 runs in the eighth inning of their matchup against Fossil Ridge that helped Vista Ridge remain alive in their regional bracket last week.

The Wolves senior had a team-high five hits against the Sabercats along with five RBIs to help lead Vista Ridge to a 17-9 win.

With her back-to-back games of five and three hits at regionals, Bast now has 10 games this season with at least three or more hits in a game.

Annabelle Jackson, fr., Mesa Ridge, cross country – Though Jackson did not win the Colorado Springs Metro League girls meet, it was one of her best finishes of the season.

Jackson placed fifth, her top placement so far this year, and clocked in at 20 minutes, 52 seconds, the second time this season she’s ran a sub-21-minute race.

Cole Harmon, sr., Lewis-Palmer, football – In a 48-0 win against Palmer, Harmon had the best rushing performance of his career.

Harmon finished the game with 120 yards on six carries and two touchdowns for the Rangers and broke a 51-yard rush against the Terrors.

It’s the first time in Harmon’s career that the senior eclipsed the 100-yard mark and he now has back-to-back games with two rushing touchdowns.

Isai Savelkoul, so., Vanguard, boys’ soccer – The Coursers sophomore had the best performance of his career in a 5-1 win against Ellicott.

Savelkoul earned his first career hat trick and finished the match with six points for Vanguard to give the Coursers their fifth win of the year.

Mark Suplisson, sr., Rampart, football – Suplisson was all over the field for the Rams in their 33-0 victory against Liberty.

Along with three tackles, Suplisson had two interceptions against the Lancers and went 3-for-4 on extra-point kicks for the Rams.

Leland Frescaz, jr., Doherty, football – Frescaz went 7 for 11 against Falcon and three of his completions went for touchdowns.

The junior QB finished with 80 passing yards and added 59 yards on five carries and a touchdown for the Spartans.

Frescaz’s three passing touchdowns gave him 14 for the season and his rushing score put him at five, which is a career high for Frescaz.

Joshiah Mezey, sr., The Classical Academy, boys’ soccer – In his previous five games, Mezey tallied two goals.

Mezey managed that in one match in a 10-0 win against Sierra. Mezey had his first multi-goal match since the season opener and helped lead the Titans past the Stallions.

Mezey netted a pair of goals and added an assist to give him five points for the game, his highest total since Aug. 27 in a 7-0 win against Roosevelt when he ended the match with six points.

Lexi Haughian, jr., Discovery Canyon, volleyball – Despite losing 3-2 to Palmer Ridge, Haughian put up a valiant effort for the Thunder.

Haughian finished with a career-high 17 kills and tied a career high in blocks with four against the Bears.

After three consecutive single-digit kill games to start September, Haughian has reached double-figure kills in 10 of the last 13 matches.

Katie Davis, sr., Discovery Canyon, softball – In a must-win game against Silver Creek, Davis pitched a gem for the Thunder.

Davis threw six innings in the circle and allowed just one hit while striking out six batters in a 6-0 win in the regional round.

The Thunder senior also added a run and a hit for the Thunder and stole a base in the contest, her fifth of the season.

Ethan Mangrum, so., Sand Creek, football – The Scorpions sophomore threw the ball three times, completed two and threw one touchdown against Gateway.

Mangrum threw a 30-yard completion to Ethan Nelson and the Scorpions quarterback added 11 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns, all team highs.

His performance against the Olympians was the sixth, 100-yard rushing game of the season for Mangrum and the fifth occasion he rushed for more than 100 and had at least two rushing TDs in the same game.

Brooke Gennerman, sr., Lewis-Palmer, volleyball – Gennerman finished with a game-high 13 kills in a sweep of Air Academy and managed three aces in the match.

Gennerman also matched a team high with 10 digs for the Rangers. The senior’s 288 kills this season leads 4A and is fifth in the state.

Erika Sayer, sr., Village, volleyball – Sayer finished the match against Liberty Common tied with teammate Lillian Edward with eight kills. But the senior did just as much damage at the service line.

The Mountaineers senior matched a season-high with six aces in the sweep and had aces on 50% of her serves, Sayer’s second-best mark of the year.

Sayer also had three blocks and an assisted stop to give her four for the game.

Savannah Siffert, sr., Vista Ridge, softball – The Wolves senior helped her team outpace Eaglecrest in the regional round to advance to the state tournament.

Siffert finished the game against the Raptors with three hits and two RBIs and scored four runs for the Wolves, who entered the contest as the No. 31 seed.

In a must-win game, the Wolves again thrived in extra innings. After scoring 10 runs in the eighth inning against Fossil Ridge, the Wolves had another clutch performance against the Raptors.

Jocelynn Kalkman finished the game with six RBIs, five hits to earn the cycle for the Wolves in the victory.

In the eighth inning, Kalkman hit a triple that scored Jaylani Jusino and Bailey Bast hit a single to send Kalkman home.

Boys’ soccer

Lewis-Palmer 1, Cheyenne Mountain 0

The Rangers only needed one goal to take down the Red-Tailed Hawks, and Jacob Morrison rose to the occasion to sink Cheyenne Mountain.

Lewis-Palmer’s senior struck in the second half to give the Rangers their fifth win of the season and gave L-P its first win in a one-goal game.

Morrison’s second-half heroics helped the Rangers break a three-game losing streak to the Red-Tailed Hawks and gave Morrison his eighth goal of the year.

Doherty 13, The Classical Academy 7

The Spartans tamed the Titans’ explosive offense and held TCA to its lowest score this season.

Alyssa Ramos scored the Spartans pair of touchdowns and finished the game with 17 carries for 65 yards. Ramos also snagged three interceptions for the Spartans.

Teammate Madison Medlin-Whittenborn also finished the game with three interceptions and seven tackles.

Cross Country

Coronado boys dominate at CSML meet

One, two, three, four, five.

That’s how the Cougars finished at the Colorado Springs Metro League South meet. Coronado’s top four all finished within one second of each other with Braxton Oliver earning the top spot at 16 minutes, 48 seconds.

The Cougars’ sweep of the top five earned them 15 points, which was nearly four times fewer than second place Mesa Ridge, which finished second with 54 points.

Trends to track

Blamires earns 1,000th career kill

In the fourth set against Lutheran, Cheyenne Mountain’s Anna Blamires gave the Red-Tailed Hawks their 14th point and reached her 1,000th career kill.

The Brigham Young University commit has 212 kills through 16 matches this season and is eighth in 4A.

Rampart adds new boys volleyball coach

Marc Phillps will take the helm as the Rams’ boys volleyball coach in the spring.

The Rams previously had players compete for Discovery Canyon’s boys volleyball team, but players will return to Rampart this season.

Rampart’s team will include players from Rampart, Liberty and Pine Creek.

Evangel Christian Academy volleyball heating up following four-game skid

The roller-coaster ride continues for the Eagles girls’ volleyball team. Following a four-game winning streak, ECA had a four-match skid.

Now, the Eagles have won five consecutive matches and have dropped just one set during their win streak. ECA is now 12-7 and is 16th in CHSAA’s 1A RPI.

Lucas Colodny breaks 27-year-old record

In a match against Rampart, where Pine Creek tied the Rams 2-2, the Eagles senior earned an assist giving him 34 for his career.

Colodny leads the Eagles with four assists and is tied for second on the team with eight points this season.
