A Palmer Lake man was killed and another motorist is hospitalized after a pair of crashes Oct. 14 on Interstate 25, just north of Colorado Springs, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The first crash, which involved three vehicles, took place about 4:30 p.m. Monday in the southbound lanes of the interstate, near the North Gate Boulevard exit, officials said. A Ford F-150 began driving erratically, across all lanes, before hitting a Jeep Wrangler and forcing it against a guardrail.

The Ford pickup continued south and hit another guardrail, forcing parts of it into a travel lane, where a Toyota RAV4 collided with it, the State Patrol said. The F-150 then ran off the right side of the roadway and rolled at least once.

The driver of the Ford, a 69-year-old man from Palmer Lake, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. The drivers of the other two vehicles reported minor injuries.

At about 9:15 p.m., while State Patrol and Colorado Department of Transportation personnel were cleaning up debris from the first crash, a Honda Pilot hit a CDOT vehicle that was blocking off parts of the road due to the cleanup effort. The vehicle was unoccupied and had its lights on, according to State Patrol Sgt. Patrick Rice.

The female driver of the Pilot was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, Rice said.

No charges have been filed in either crash, Rice said.
