Palmer Lake has executed a contract to bring down the additional structures on the Elephant Rock property.

The Town of Palmer Lake Board of Trustees approved a resolution to accept a $75,000 bid from West Fork Construction during the boards’ Oct. 10 regular meeting for the demolition of the six cabins and the “long building” of its Elephant Rock property.

Previously, after some back-and-forth discussion regarding what to do with the seven structures, the board had directed town staff to acquire additional estimates from contractors for the demolitions of the additional structures, to be performed after asbestos abatement was completed. Town Administrator Dawn Collins said the abatement was on track to be completed Oct. 18.

Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of December. Following the abatement, the Palmer Lake fire department would conduct training events using the seven structures for seven consecutive days to include fire crews from all three shifts, prior to demolition.

The acquired structure training for the fire department personnel would have the objective to optimize enter upper ability with the departments mutual aid partners. Among the targeted objectives are search and rescue efforts, hose movement, venting for smoke movement control, Mayday operations, and firefighter survival.

The Board of Trustees approved the resolution 4-2, with Shanna Ball and Sam Padgett voting against it.
