WATCH: Bears spotted north of downtown Colorado Springs on Ring camera

Three bears have been spotted near downtown Colorado Springs on Monday night, just north of Cascade Avenue and Uintah Street.

Ring camera footage shows two of the bears walking up a residential street, passing by a parked car.

Holly B., who shared the video with the Gazette, said she saw a total of three bears.

“They jumped over our fence, into our backyard, and then left and walked south towards the CC campus,” she said.

The neighborhood mom said she had never seen bears in the area before. Her daughters Indy, 7, and Elowyn, 4, and son Oliver, 2, reportedly witnessed the urban ursine excursion as well.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the Gold Hill Division received calls reporting the bears on Glen Avenue on Monday evening. The department says they are unable to do anything about the bears, letting Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials handle the situation.

The Gazette reached out to CPW on Monday evening but was unable to reach a spokeperson regarding the bear sighting.

According to prior Gazette reporting, CPW officials say people are likely to see increased bear activity in urban areas as winter starts to creep up on the city. More than 50% of bear incidents reported in 2023 occurred in August, September and October.

Although the black bear’s natural diet usually includes berries, fruits, nuts, plants and grasses, when these become scarce their hunger can easily overcome their fear of humans.

CPW encourages residents to take precautions to help avoid human/wildlife conflicts, such as keeping garbage in well-secured locations, so bears are not tempted to venture close to homes.

Other precautions include hazing bears that get too close to one’s home. Yelling, throwing objects and making loud noises will often scare bears away, helping to keep them becoming too comfortable in the city.
