Fire bans have been put in effect in Teller and El Paso counties, according to officials.

Open burning, fireworks, explosives and model rockets are all prohibited on public and private lands as the county experiences hot and dry conditions along with high wind gusts that could lead to wildfires, according to a Teller County Sheriff’s Office news release. The ban also applies to anyone with a county burn permit .

A similar announcement was announced by El Paso County Sheriff Joe Roybal Friday afternoon for all unincorporated areas in the county.

In a news release, he asked residents to spread awareness and hold themselves accountable while the restrictions are in effect.

“El Paso County is a beautiful place to enjoy the colorful fall season, and by working together, we can prevent dangerous wildfires from devastating our community,” he said.

Exceptions to the stage 1 ban include smokers, contained campfires and other fueled appliances that are at least 10 feet away from combustible materials, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ahead of the weekend, the National Weather Service said that a fire weather watch will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday for areas around Colorado Springs, north toward Monument and Castle Rock and on the eastern Plains.
