The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a social media post that threatens multiple schools at two local districts, but the early evidence suggests that the post is a hoax, according to law enforcement officials Tuesday.

The post, which began circulating late Monday, listed several middle schools and high schools in Harrison District 2 and Colorado Springs District 11, suggesting that the schools were going to “get shot up.”

Officials from both districts told The Gazette that they were aware of the bogus post, and that CSPD was notified.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to waste time and resources on something like this,” said District 2 spokeswoman Christine O’Brien.

CSPD spokesman Ira Cronin said Safe2Tell received multiple reports about the same post.

“Currently, nothing suggests that this is a credible threat,” Cronin said.

A message to Harrison District 2 families said the timing of the post may not be coincidental.

“Unfortunately, these individuals target schools on Count Day and prevent our students from getting the education they deserve,” the message stated.

Each year, the Colorado Department of Education conducts a statewide pupil count which, among other things, helps determine eligibility for funding.

Police officials advised students and their parents to remain alert to any kind of threat, whether direct or indirect.

“CSPD’s message to parents and school kids is to – as always – be vigilant, and if they see anything that seems out of place, including the behavior of a fellow student, to tell a trusted adult,” Cronin said. “If the individual or individuals responsible for this image are determined to be local, there will be consequences.”

Two local students are facing charges for their involvement in false school threats last month, according to earlier reporting from The Gazette.
