Everyone, yourself included, deserves a library card | Library Limelight

Reading builds strong communities | Library Limelight

If you live in the Pikes Peak region and don’t have your library card yet, spare me a moment of your time. One of the things that drew me to working at Pikes Peak Library District is that libraries are unique public places where everyone belongs. It doesn’t matter what kind of job you have, whether you live with roommates or family, what age you are, the types of hobbies you have, or whether you’re outgoing or keep to yourself.

The thing I hear new library cardholders say most often is that they didn’t realize how much the Library District had to offer them. Libraries have something for everyone so that you can do more of the things you’re interested in without stretching your budget. A library card is the most valuable card in your wallet.

You likely know that PPLD has books and DVDs to borrow, programs for children, computers to use and librarians who can answer questions. You might even know that the library has makerspace equipment like sewing machines, 3D printers and laser engravers you can use for your personal or small business projects. But did you know that you can use the library’s audio and video studio spaces to take professional headshots, create commercials and music videos and record music albums and podcasts?

Your library card can take you to places around the Pikes Peak region and Colorado where you haven’t been before. We offer State Park Pass backpacks so that you can explore Colorado state parks, and the Pikes Peak Culture Pass, which gets you access to a variety of attractions around our region. You can also stay up to date on news or dive into history with an assortment of newspaper databases. For any young children in your life ages 0–5, take a look at the Toy Library for an assortment of large toys like Rody horses, push and play walkers, and other toys you can check out to help them build their large motor skills.

The library’s monthly programs provide opportunities to learn, socialize, and try new things. You can learn basic computer skills, try new hobbies, practice professional and leadership skills and combat isolation and loneliness by being with others in the community. There are also a variety of programs where children can get a strong start on literacy, learning and socializing like Storytime and Paws to Read. Although you don’t need a library card to attend these programs, your library card allows you to pick up reading materials or something for game night while you’re here.

These are only a few of the things a PPLD library card gives you access to. You Belong at the Library. If you don’t have your library card yet or know someone who doesn’t, spread the word and stop by for your card today! Help PPLD reach 3,000 new library card sign-ups this September in celebration of Library Card Sign-up Month. Visit ppld.org/you-belong to find out what a library card will do for you.
