El Paso County jail inmate dies days after apparent suicide attempt

An El Paso County jail inmate who was hospitalized after being found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday has died, according to a Sunday news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The man, whose name was not released, was found at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday during a routine welfare check and was taken to a hospital. Evidence found in the man’s cell suggested that he had attempted suicide, officials said.

“Despite efforts and the highest level of care by medical professionals at the hospital, the individual passed away at approximately 5:35 p.m. today,” the news release stated.

Sheriff Joe Roybal has ordered an investigation of the incident, according to the release. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will make an official determination of the cause and manner of death.
