UCCS, Rockley Foundation host piano sale to fundraise for music education
The Rockley Family Foundation will host its annual instrument sale in partnership with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs this week. Near-new pianos and violins will be offered at a discounted rate.
“When people come, they’re going to see a really big list of instruments from all kinds of different varieties of prices,” said Tobin Rockley, president of the foundation.
How it works: The foundation donates brand-new, high-quality pianos and violins to the university each school year, and then sells these instruments at the end of the year to fundraise for the program. As Rockley said, “It perpetuates the program.”
“For UCCS, they get quite a few pianos every year, which helps them in terms of their maintenance costs and different things, and keeps it so they can use their budget more appropriately,” Rockley said.
Most of the instruments at the sale are less than 1 year old, include a new factory warranty and are tuned. Rockley said the selection ranges from starters to Steinways.
Rockley founded the Golden-based nonprofit in 2007. The foundation quickly grew into a nationwide organization that partners with schools and universities to provide scholarship funds for music programs as well as instruments. Since starting, they’ve contributed about $43 million in donations.
UCCS and the Rockley Family Foundation hosted their first fundraising sale in 2009.
“It’s really designed to be a force for good, for music education across the board,” Rockley said.
“For the people to come in and participate, it’s a great way to find a really good instrument for a really good price that’s helping a really good cause. But it also helps just education as a whole, providing some exposure for UCCS.”
