Colorado Springs to remember 9/11 victims with several memorial events
The community will remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks with several memorial events this week.
The city will host a memorial at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Peace Officer’s Memorial in Memorial Park with a ceremony featuring retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, who was the commander of the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center during the 9/11 attacks.
Gould is expected to share his memories of the event and its effect on our nation. The operations center he led during the attacks provided critical information to the Pentagon’s National Military Command Center, and transmitted North American Aerospace Defense Command orders to ground aircraft over the U.S., a city news release said.
An unofficial gathering of first responders at the Manitou Springs Incline is planned a little bit before 8 a.m. Wednesday. First responders are welcome to participate. The event will not close the incline to the public.
Air Force Academy cadets are expected to mark the day with a 19-hour relay race where they will each run for 15 minutes handing off a baton and a firefighter’s helmet. The event that will run through Thursday morning will be closed to the public, but The Gazette will provide highlights in its 9/11 coverage.
The American Legion Neal Thomas Jr. Centennial Post 209 will host a 2.5-mile walk starting at 5 p.m. at the Global War on Terror Memorial in Memorial Park.
Mt. Carmel will host its Patriot Day give-back event Friday. Military-affiliated community members are welcome starting at 9 a.m. Friday at 530 Communication Circle. The community is welcome at noon. Mt. Carmel is planning to give away boxes stuffed with food and nonperishables. Patriot Day was declared in honor of the 9/11 victims.
