Motorcyclist killed in collision with vehicle on Interstate 25 on Sunday

Colorado Springs police investigate alleged break-in, shots fired

A motorcycle collided with a compact SUV on Interstate 25 early Sunday, resulting in the death of the rider, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash, initially reported as involving multiple vehicles, occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday south of Fountain in the southbound lanes of the interstate, according to Trooper Gabriel Moltrer.

The deceased rider was a 43-year-old man from Lake George, Moltrer said. The other driver was an 18-year-old male from Midlothian, Texas.

Investigators determined that a Toyota RAV4 lost control while heading south on I-25, hitting a cable rail on the left side of the freeway and going into a spin. The motorcyclist was trying to pass the RAV4 when the bike made contact, sending the Honda cycle out of control and throwing the rider, who died at the scene, officials said.

The driver of the RAV4, whose name was not released, was transported to a hospital but was not seriously injured. He had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The motorcycle rider had been wearing a helmet.

The deceased man’s name is being withheld pending a positive ID and autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, the State Patrol said. No charges were announced.
