Attempts by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office on Friday to recover a stolen vehicle led to injuries for a deputy and a suspected thief still on the run.

A spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office said that a deputy spotted a stolen vehicle around 9 a.m. The driver of the vehicle — described as a 2015 blue Mazda four-door hatchback — initially drove away. The deputy relocated the vehicle near Windmill Mesa Park and attempted to approach. The driver then reportedly tried to flee.

“As the vehicle sped away, it struck the deputy,” the Sheriff’s Office spokesman said. The deputy then fired at least one round at the vehicle.

Investigators do not know if the driver was injured.

The deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They will be placed on administrative leave — standard procedure following the use of a firearm in an officer-involved, use-of-force incident — as the Colorado Springs Police Department conducts the investigation.

Neither the driver nor the vehicle had been found at press time. The Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help to find the Mazda, but with a warning of caution to not approach the vehicle or its driver and instead call 911.

The shooting near Fantasia Drive and Fencer Road in Security-Widefield was reported on X around 9:45 a.m. by the Sheriff’s Office. The block of Fantasia Drive — north of Bradley Road and west of Grinnell Boulevard — was blocked by crime-scene tape.

Just before 11 a.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Metro Crime Lab arrived. A single evidence marker was visible in the roadway roughly 5 feet from the sidewalk that lined a row of homes.

One neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said he heard a single gunshot at about 9:30 a.m., followed by dogs barking.

Friday’s incident marks the second local officer-involved shooting this week.

On Tuesday, Colorado Springs police said they approached a couple who were heading from the Walmart on East Platte Avenue toward the stolen vehicle when department officials said a male produced a gun. In response, department officers fired at the suspect, hitting him at least one time. The male died at the scene.

His identity had not been released as of Friday morning.
