As Rampart volleyball players peered at the scoreboard in the second set, no one’s face displayed concern.

The score: 24-22 Vista Ridge. Moments later, it read 26-24 Rams.

Rampart snatched the second set from Vista Ridge on Thursday night and swept the Wolves 25-17, 26-24, 25-16 at home to win in three sets and improve to 3-0.

“We’ve been down before, so I’m not shocked we pulled it off,” junior Gabrielle Weissgarber said. “In our game against Palmer Ridge we were down by a lot and we came back and won, so I had no doubt we could do that in this set.”

The Rams improved to 11-0 against Vista Ridge and, with the sweep, continued another streak.

Vista Ridge last earned a set victory against Rampart in 2016 when the Rams beat the Wolves 3-2.

Since then, the Rams have now won 30 sets in a row against the Wolves and needed to grind to continue that streak.

After leading the entire first set, Rampart trailed 5-4 after a kill from Annika Kane gave the Wolves the advantage.

Rampart then used an 8-3 run to force a Wolves timeout and built a 13-7 lead. Then, the Wolves found their groove.

“It’s common for teams in volleyball to come out a little bit hotter in the second set,” Rampart coach Brianne Perkett said. “Vista Ridge started playing better. … We talked a lot about keeping our energy high when things get tough. When they score points how do we cut rallies at a couple of points instead of allowing huge runs.”

The Rams built a 19-15 lead when Toryn Dempsey scored an ace on three of her next four serves to tie the set at 19-all.

Vista Ridge scored the following two points, but the Rams matched the effort and capped it with a kill by Anaya Wright to tie it at 21-21.

“When I go into a game and we’re down, I always try to find a way to help my team to score so that we’re in a better position,” Wright said. “I went in with confidence and didn’t overthink the kill in my head and that helped.”

Vista Ridge scored three of the next four points to build a 24-22 lead, but hitting errors by the Wolves knotted the contest at 24-all.

Rampart’s poise allowed the Rams to capitalize and earn the final two set points and Weissgarber earned the final kill.

“I wanted to find open spots and go for the weaker players I know of,” Weissgarber said. “We wanted to get the point and move on to the third set because we knew it was important to end it there.”

The Rams burned their only time out of the match in the second set when they trailed 19-17. Perkett requested players focus on their body language and limit unforced errors.

That advice worked in the second set and buoyed the Rams in the third.

Rampart bolted to a 16-10 lead in the final set and forced the Wolves to call timeout to slow the Rams’ momentum, but to no avail.

After the timeout, the Rams never allowed the finale to get closer than six points and closed the set on a 9-6 run.

“Our energy dipped a little bit in the second set,” Wright said. “Toward the end, we started getting kills and served aces. We came together and that brought the energy back to help us get the win.”

This marks Rampart’s first 3-0 start since 2021 when the Rams finished 21-6. For Perkett, who’s in her second year as the Rams’ coach, she believes the winning trend will continue.

“We’ve picked up some big wins and hopefully starting on a high note will propel us into the later half of the season,” Perkett said. “We’re focused on what we’re doing on our side and we’re improving our shots with each play and that’s important as the year goes on.”
