The arrest affidavit for the man who allegedly killed his wife and dumped her body before turning himself in to a police station sheds light on a possible motive for the crime.

According to the document, Stephen Sze Hang Chan, 79, called police the morning of Sept. 1, and later arrived at the Colorado Springs police Falcon substation to turn himself in.

“I’ve come to turn myself in. I killed my wife,” he said upon arrival, according to police.

Investigators began interviewing Chan, who they say waived his Miranda rights.

According to the affidavit Chan then told investigators that he suspected his wife, 54-year-old Jian Chan, had been taking money and having an extra-marital affair. He went on to say that he had shot her twice in the chest with a “38” on Walsen Road, not far from their residence north of North Gate Boulevard.

Shortly thereafter police say they received a 911 call of a body discovered on a trail near Walsen Road. Police state in the arrest affidavit that the victim was bound, and appeared to have sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest.

The body was later positively identified as Jian Chan.

A revolver handgun was found on the passenger-side seat of the vehicle Stephen Chan had driven to the police substation.

In a subsequent interview, police say Chan elaborated on his motive, saying that he believed his wife had been stealing money from him and having affairs for at least the last 17 years and had refused to speak to him for the last two years. Chan told police that after she began taking things he cared about, such as vegetables from his garden and his favorite cooking pot, he decided to tie her up, confront her about her behavior and then kill her.

Chan remained in the El Paso County jail as of Friday evening, on a $2 million bond, charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. His next court date is Sept. 9 for a first appearance.
