Colorado Springs man turns himself in to police after claiming to have killed his wife

Armed robbery suspect found hiding in car in Colorado Springs, police say

A Colorado Springs man turned himself in to police on Sunday after calling 911 and claiming to have killed his wife, law enforcement officials said.

Stephen Chan, 79, faces first-degree murder and kidnapping charges, according to a news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 7 a.m. on Sunday, EPCSO operators received a call from a man who said he had killed his wife, the release stated. The man hung up, but a trace indicated that the phone was near Walsen Road in unincorporated El Paso County.

Not long after the first call, a second caller told law enforcement that a body had been dumped near the 600 block of Walsen Road. Responding deputies found a deceased female at that location.

The first caller’s phone number led to a possible address in the 13800 block of Horsetail Terrace in Colorado Springs. A Stephen Chan is listed at 13870 Horsetail Terrace.

Colorado Springs police were called to make a welfare check at that address, but Chan had already turned himself in at the Falcon substation.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending official identification by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. The investigation is still open, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
