Man accused of causing woman’s death outside Colorado Springs bingo hall intends to plead not guilty
The man accused of causing the death of 62-year-old Dorothy King in an alleged April carjacking attempt outside the South Academy Boulevard bingo hall intends to plead not guilty to all charges.
Nathaniel Buchmann, 33, appeared in court Thursday for a plea hearing where his attorney informed the court that he intends to plead not guilty on all charges, and will take his case to trial.
Buchmann faces 13 charges for allegedly causing King’s death at the bingo hall including second-degree murder, robbery, first-degree motor vehicle theft and eight habitual criminal sentence enhancers.
According to previous reporting from The Gazette, Buchmann is suspected of attacking King in the parking lot of Bingo World at 272 S. Academy Blvd., on the afternoon of April 17. Footage described in the affidavit showed a man approaching King and her truck in the parking lot before the video began a new file.
Some time later the man was seated in the truck while King leaned inside. The affidavit said the man was observed thrusting a knife toward King. The driver of the truck then reversed over King’s foot and ran over her after she fell to the ground.
King was pronounced dead at the parking lot, with a laceration on her torso consistent with a knife wound.
Despite announcing the intention to plead not guilty, Buchmann will not do so until his new plea hearing date on Oct. 2. The plea hearing was delayed due to attorneys and the court’s desire to have the trial in February or March of next year, and a plea on Thursday would have made having trial within Buchmann’s speedy trial timeframe, which is a defendant’s right to a trial within six months of entering a plea, difficult.
In addition to the open homicide case, Buchmann had a “prolific” criminal history according to the case affidavit, including two previous convictions for motor vehicle theft from 2019 and 2021. Buchmann was out on bond on motor vehicle theft and criminal mischief charges at the time of his arrest for King’s murder.
According to the court documents, he also had an outstanding arrest warrant issued April 16 in a carjacking incident during which a woman was forced out of a pickup truck while in her driveway.
The court ruled Thursday that Buchmann’s two additional open criminal cases in El Paso County — where he is accused of motor vehicle theft and criminal mischief — will be put on pause until the open homicide case is resolved.
Buchmann appeared to court in custody of the El Paso County jail. He faces a $1 million bond in the homicide case to be released from custody as well as a $50,000 bond and a $75,000 bond in his two additional open criminal cases in El Paso County.
