As the kids say: The script writers did their thing with this one.

With Village High School one point away from its first home win in school history, Lillian Edwards delivered the final kill.

Against her former team, no less.

The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 this season with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 victory against The Classical Academy on Monday at Mountain Ridge Middle School.

“I knew I had to let Erika have an assist for that one,” Edwards jested with teammate Erika Sayer by her side. “I saw her set it and I’m like, ‘I’m going to get a kill here.’”

While Edwards joked following the sweep against her former teammates and coaches, she admitted she battled nerves entering the contest.

“This weekend, I was very nervous about the game,” Edwards said. “I didn’t want to beat them, but I wanted to play them. But I also was worried I was going to get rattled by them. I think I had a few points where I did get rattled, but my teammates were able to pull me back in.”

Such as in the opening set when the Titans built a 4-1 lead to start the match.

Though momentary, the Mountaineers required time to gather their composure to stave off a Titans run.

The Mountaineers knotted the game at five-all and the teams exchanged the lead until Sayer’s spike gave Village a 17-16 lead.

Freshman Norah Hollis ended the set with a block on a Titans kill attempt to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

“I think the start was a combination of nerves, not knowing each other’s games very well and a lot of obstacles these girls are overcoming early in the season,” Village coach Shannon Baker said. “It’s nice to see them come together as a squad and the whole school showing up to support us.”

Village, which has an enrollment of just over 540 students, managed to fill the gym at Mountain Ridge and let an array of chants fly in support of their players – and a few jokes toward the TCA crowd.

“It was so good to have their support,” Edwards said. “I expected a few people to come, but that was half of our school that showed up. To see that many people show up to support the one sport we have right now was exciting.”

Sayer echoed those sentiments and noted how vital the crowd was to assisting the Mountaineers.

“Our student section showed up and helped us big time in this game,” Sayer said. “We had a bunch of kids from different schools who showed up to support. That made all the difference.”

After TCA and Village played tug-o-war with the lead, Village built a 15-13 advantage and closed the set on a 10-6 run to earn a 2-0 match lead.

The final set, however, began with the Mountaineers struggling to stop the Titans’ attack. Village trailed 7-2, which forced Baker to burn the Mountaineers’ first and only timeout of the game.

“Coach told us to take a deep breath,” Sayer said. “We all get a little amped up with our nerves sometimes. It’s part of the game to play with nerves. It’s not about having nerves, it’s about what you do with them that matters.”

After the Titans grabbed a 15-14 lead, the Mountaineers used a 10-5 run with Edwards scoring three of the final four points of the game, including the match-ending kill.

“It feels really good,” Edwards said. “It feels like we’re starting to prove ourselves. …We’re supposed to be good, but we know we haven’t done anything notable just yet. I think we’re starting to prove that we are and we’re making things happen.”
