Palmer Park to undergo fire mitigation work next week
Palmer Park will be undergoing fire mitigation work to reduce fire risk starting at the end of the month, but will remain open during the operation.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department’s mitigation section, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and City Forestry staff are teaming up to complete the mitigation starting the week of Aug. 26.
Much of the fire risk prevention will include reducing critical fuels, according to a press release Thursday. This will be done by limbing, thinning stand density, chipping of any dead and down woody debris and the removal of live, dead and diseased standing vegetation.
The city’s goal of these efforts is to reduce wildfire risk to wildlife habitat, recreation resources, biological areas and natural and cultural resources. Alongside these areas, focus will also be directed toward the surrounding neighborhoods and any public property nearby.
Palmer Park will remain open during mitigation efforts, the city says. However, some intermittent closures of certain trails is to be expected to create a safe working environment.
The city encourages parkgoers to follow all signs and detours. Trail users should expect to see forestry machinery, chippers and hand-working crews with chainsaws. Caution is advised around the work areas.
