The Colorado Springs Police Department has lifted a shelter-in-place order in southwest Colorado Springs after a 6-hour standoff with a barricaded suspect.

Police say they received a call for a disturbance at 11 a.m. and responded to the area of 2200 Woodburn Street, west of the Broadmoor Towne Center. Upon arrival, residents of the home indicated that a prior tenant had come to the house threatening them with a knife and claiming he was “going to take over the house.”

The  man barricaded inside the residence,  and then refused law enforcement’s requests to exit.  The residents of the home were able to exit safely, according to police.

At 3 p.m., after obtaining a search warrant, as well as an arrest warrant for the suspect, law enforcement began to search the home.

At around 5:10 p.m., the first round of chemical irritant was introduced, but was ineffective. A second and third round was introduced at 5:35 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., also proving to be ineffective, police said.

At 6:45 p.m., the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.  Police have identified the suspect as 37-year-old Juan Louis Lopez.

Lopez was transferred for medical clearance due to the chemical irritants before being booked into the El Paso County jail.

Police said he is facing numerous charges, including first-degree burglary, attempted second-degree assault and felony menacing.
