Shooting at The Citadel mall leaves 1 injured: Police
One person was injured in a shooting inside The Citadel mall Wednesday, according to Colorado Springs police.
The shooting was reported to police at 3:25 p.m. One adult male was confirmed to be hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the man was shot in the leg following an altercation between two people.
Police Department spokeswoman Caitlin Ford said during a news conference that the two individuals were inside an employee-only area when at least one round was fired. Mall security said that the wounded person was an employee of the mall, a shoe-shiner, and had one gunshot wound.
Law enforcement confirmed that the incident was not an active-shooter situation, but rather believed that it was an isolated incident. The mall was on a brief lockdown but was reopened to the public late in the afternoon. A nearby school, Coperni 3, also went into lockdown briefly, but reopened. People were seen entering and exiting the mall and the school, specifically.
More than eight squad vehicles could be seen near the north entrance into the mall, which leads into the food court, shortly after the shooting. A few other cars were spotted on the opposite side of the mall as well.
A witness told a Gazette reporter that he saw a man running away from the scene after one loud “bang” coming from the food court just before the call came in to police.
No suspect was reported to be in custody, police said late in the afternoon.
Some law enforcement were likely to remain on the scene for several hours, police said.
Anyone with information or who was a witness is encouraged to call 719-444-7000 or Pikes Peak Crime Stoppers.
The Wednesday shooting follows a recent ban prohibiting Colorado Springs-area uniformed military members from going to The Citadel mall. Shortly after the news broke, exceptions for visits related to education or religion were allowed.
Last year, on Christmas Eve, three people were shot and one, Teryus Thomas, 18, was killed inside the mall. Alleged shooter, Josiah Brown, 22, is facing 11 charges in the shooting.
Brown faces two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of first-degree assault and one count of weapon possession by a previous offender.
Brown’s next appearance in court will be Nov. 1 with his jury trial scheduled to start in January.
The Citadel, which opened in 1972, is one of the Springs’ two enclosed regional shopping malls, along with the north side Chapel Hills Mall that opened a decade later.
