Stage 1 fire restrictions have been implemented in Teller County, according to a resolution passed by the county commissioners on July 31.

“Current conditions and circumstances of high fire hazard exist in Teller County and a significant lack of firefighting resources necessitate the imposition of a Stage I fire ban,” the resolution said.

The announcement came amid a heat wave that has settled in the Pikes Peak region, bringing high temperatures and dry conditions along with an outbreak of wildfires near metro Denver and in northern Colorado.

This ban restricts open burning across Teller County. Open burning of materials not contained in an outdoor fireplace or permanent fire ring is prohibited. Explosives, fireworks and model rockets are also banned through the resolution.

All fire rings, pits and grates must be at least 25 feet from all structures and must be less than 3 feet in diameter or 3 feet in length and width and must be at least 18 inches in depth. A water supply or other approved fire-extinguishing measures must be readily available.

Stage 1 fire restrictions have also been implemented in unincorporated areas of El Paso County.

“Adoption of this resolution is necessary for the preservation and protection of the public health, safety and welfare of inhabitants of Teller County,” the resolution said.
