Stage 1 fire restrictions have been implemented in all unincorporated areas of El Paso County, according to a news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The announcement came amid a heat wave that has settled in the Pikes Peak region, bringing hot temperatures and dry conditions along with an outbreak of wildfires near metro Denver and in northern Colorado.

“I take seriously the value of community and family-oriented events such as barbeques and campfire gatherings,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joe Roybal. “However, risk must be considered when weather conditions are arid, and fuel levels become dangerously high as they are now.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Stage 1 fire restriction prohibits the following activities:

– Open burning, excluding fires or campfires held within a permanently constructed fire grate at a developed camp or picnic ground and charcoal grill or wood-burning stove utilized at a private residence within a 3-foot distance of all flammable materials.

– The use of fireworks without a permit, outdoor pyrotechnics or the use of model rockets.

– Outdoor smoking except within the confines of a vehicle or building, or within a 3-foot distance of flammable materials.

– Welding or the operation of an acetylene or a similar torch producing an open flame.

– Internal combustion engine operation without the use of a spark arresting device that has been properly installed and is in working order.

– Additionally, holding a prescribed burn is prohibited; previously issued permits for such burns have been revoked.

“I ask for the community’s assistance in spreading awareness of our fire restrictions and holding themselves accountable for their conduct,” Roybal said in the release.

The Sheriff’s Office asked any members who witness or suspect violations of the fire restriction to report the activity by calling 719-390-5555.
