Colorado Springs weather: Stronger storms expected Friday
Colorado Springs is forecast for bouts of afternoon rain as stronger storm systems move away from the mountains into the eastern plains Friday.
Highs on Friday will be a few degrees above average, with scattered storms this afternoon from the mountains to the Plains.
“After storms rocked parts of the Pikes Peak Region last night, we’re expecting an encore performance of those storms this afternoon from the mountains to the plains. A few stronger storms on the eastern plains could lead to 1-inch hail and 60 mph wind gusts, along with the potential for flash flooding,” meteorologist Alan Rose with Gazette news partner KOAA said.
“The other story state-wide will remain the large fires burning from the Front Range to a new fire burning in Southwestern Colorado this morning. Smoke will be thickest today north of the Palmer Divide, with our AQI in Colorado Springs expected to remain within the Moderate range due to high concentrations of ground layer ozone,” Rose continued.
There’s a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms in Friday’s forecast, mainly after 1 p.m. Expect mostly sunny skies and a high of 91 degrees.
Looking ahead to Friday night, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue through 11 p.m. Expect partly cloudy skies and a low of 60 degrees.
Temperatures are anticipated to glide into the 90s on Saturday and increase slightly on Sunday. Chances for storms throughout the area will increase on Sunday, according to Rose.
“Storm chances will increase to around 20% on Sunday in the Pikes Peak Region before a transition to a wetter pattern as we look ahead towards next week.”
“This will be marked by a noticeable shift to a monsoon pattern, with storms likely each afternoon, along with the potential for soaking rains and cooling temperatures towards the end of next week,” Rose said.
