Fern’s Diner & Drinkery will soon be closing its doors after a nearly two-year run at the foot of Pikes Peak Highway.

The owners of the vegan diner and bar in Cascade announced late last week in a Facebook post that Aug. 11 would be their last day in business.

The owners, Tyler Schiedel and Cody Rilo, cited location as the reason for the closure. Fern’s is located not far off, but not on, U.S. 24.

“We have tried everything we could to get enough business to make it a success. With 5 stars across the board, we can only blame location,” a Facebook post said.

Schiedel and Rilo also own and operate The Burrowing Owl, a vegan restaurant at 1791 S. 8th St. in Colorado Springs, which has been open since 2015.

Schiedel and Rilo bought the Cascade diner in July 2021, which was formerly home to Mildred’s Cafe, embarking on a nearly yearlong remake of the restaurant’s interior and outdoor seating area.

The diner was named in honor of their beloved, late French bulldog and adorned with a large stained-glass window with her image.

The couple declined a Gazette request for an interview but said on Facebook that the property and diner will be up for sale.
