Once again, the performing arts in Palmer Lake will get Funky this August.

Quickly becoming a staple of the arts community in Palmer Lake, the Funky Little Theater Company returns to the town to present its most recent production. Opening Friday, Aug. 2, at Palmer Lake Town Hall, Funky Little Theater Company presents “Last Train to Nibroc.”

The Last Train to Nibroc is written by playwright and educator Arlene Hutton. FLT’s production features a cast of Owen Milks and Celeste Woody and was directed by Ray Brown. The play serves as Funky Little Theater’s 52nd production, following its run of the comedy Four Old Broads.

Over the last couple years, FLT has toured a handful of productions to Palmer Lake with popular response. However, “Last Train to Nibroc” is FLT’s first full production in Palmer Lake, playing for three weekends.

Set in December of 1940, on an east-bound, cross-country train carrying the bodies of great American writers Nathanael West and F. Scott Fitgerald, “Last Train to Nibroc” is about the meeting of May and Raleigh. Raleigh is an aspiring writer who is unable to enlist to serve in WWII because of a medical condition. May wants to be a missionary, and soon they discover they are from neighboring towns in Kentucky. What starts as a chance meeting becomes two people navigating through tough times in a country at war, discovering what they have to give up to get what they really want in this boy-meets-girl romance.

“It’s a funny, touching romance of two people searching for happiness,” FLT theater director Chis Medina said. “It’s a good ol’ slice of Americana.”

“Last Train to Nibroc” was nominated for Best Play (2000) by the New York Drama League and was the first FringeNYC production to transfer to Off-Broadway. “Last Train to Nibroc” is playwright Arlene Hutton’s first installment of her award-winning Nibroc Trilogy. It was later followed up in the series with her play “See Rock City” and finished with “Gulf View Drive.”

Last June, the Town of Palmer Lake Board of Trustees approved a resolution to enter a Memo of Understanding between the town and the Funky Little Theater Company establishing the same partnership as other entities which make use of town hall on a regular basis.
